North Tyneside Council’s November 2024 housing repairs policy identifies rats, mice, fleas, bed bugs and cockroaches as pests covered for council tenants. Its published FOI records borough-wide residential rat/mouse treatment visits in 2020–2022. The policy also provides for necessary repairs or remedial work to help prevent recurrence. These provisions apply to eligible council tenants, not to all homes or to Clear Pest Control services. The cards below explain building-related risk factors; they are not Wallsend infestation statistics.
Rats near waste storage and drains
Unsecured rubbish, gaps and defective drainage can create opportunities for rats. The council has documented domestic rat and mouse service visits, without town-level infestation rankings. If rats keep returning, a CCTV drain survey can find the defect they use.
Cockroaches in warm kitchens and service spaces
Cockroaches may shelter around appliances, pipework and moisture. North Tyneside Council includes cockroaches in its council-tenancy treatment policy. After treatment, specialist cleaning removes droppings and egg cases.
Wasps around eaves, sheds and rooflines
Wasps can build nests in roof voids, wall cavities and garden outbuildings. Check for regular flight paths and avoid disturbing an active nest.
Mice entering homes through small gaps
Mice can exploit gaps around pipework, doors and service penetrations. North Tyneside Council identifies mice among pests covered for council tenants.
Bed bugs in bedrooms and guest accommodation
Bed bugs can travel with luggage or used furnishings and hide close to sleeping areas. Early signs include small blood spots on sheets and a sweet, musty smell near the bed.
Shared waste areas and food premises
In town-centre food premises, flats and shared-bin areas, secure waste storage, routine cleaning and sealing gaps can reduce opportunities for pests. This is general prevention advice, not evidence of elevated infestation rates in Wallsend. Food businesses can arrange routine checks through our commercial pest control service.
Recorded North Tyneside Council rodent visits (2020–2022)
A council FOI response dated March 2023 recorded 613 residential visits for rats and/or mice in 2020, 475 in 2021 and 338 in 2022. These are borough-wide service visits, not unique infestations or current Wallsend neighbourhood rates.

Seasonal pest prevention guidance
Spring
Queen wasps can begin nest-building as temperatures rise. Inspect eaves and sheds without disturbing nests.
Summer
Wasp colonies generally grow in warm months. Keep food waste contained around gardens and outdoor eating areas.
Autumn
Wasp colonies decline later in the year. Rats and mice remain active and can use existing entry points.
Winter
Rats and mice remain active year-round, including indoors. Check gaps, pipework and drainage for signs of access.
