The city we work in

Carlisle at a Glance

Carlisle is the only city in Cumbria and the last major stop on the M6 before Scotland. It is compact, it is built on three rivers, and it has farmland on every edge. Those three things shape almost every pest call we take here.

77,730

People in the city

Built-up area population at the 2021 Census. Homes, student lets and food businesses sit close together, so pests move easily between them.

3 rivers

Eden, Caldew and Petteril

All three meet at Carlisle. Riverbanks, culverts and the drains that feed them are natural rat territory.

2005 & 2015

Two major floods

The 2005 flood reached around 2,700 homes and the December 2015 flood was worse. Flood damage to drains still gives rats a way in today.

Victorian

Terraced streets

Denton Holme, Caldewgate and Botchergate are lined with late Victorian terraces. Shared walls and old floor voids let mice travel from house to house.

2 campuses

University of Cumbria

Fusehill Street and Brampton Road. Student shared houses with a high turnover of tenants and furniture.

M6 & rail

A travel hub

Hotels, guest houses and the West Coast Main Line bring a steady flow of visitors, and visitors bring luggage.

How Carlisle Is Affected by Pests

Carlisle gets a mix of city and country problems. Rodents lead the list all year, wasps take over in summer, and squirrels need more care here than almost anywhere else in England.

Rats along the rivers and drains

Homes near the Eden, the Caldew and the Petteril see the most rat activity, especially in Denton Holme, Willowholme and Warwick Road. Flooding pushes rats out of riverbanks and sewers, and cracked or displaced drains left behind after a flood are one of the most common ways they get under a house. Where rats keep coming back, we look at the drains first with a drain survey.

Mice in terraces from autumn

Once the fields around the city are harvested and the weather turns, mice head indoors. In terraced streets they rarely stay in one house: they follow pipework and shared voids next door. That is why we treat the entry points, not just the room where you saw droppings.

Squirrels in red squirrel country

Cumbria is one of the last strongholds of the red squirrel, which is protected by law. Grey squirrels in lofts are a real problem on the city edges, but we always confirm the species before any work starts. Reds are never trapped or disturbed.

Wasps in older stone and brick

From June to September, wasps nest in the eaves, air bricks and lofts of older properties, and around gardens close to Bitts Park and Rickerby Park. A nest found early is smaller and quicker to remove.

Bed bugs in lets and guest houses

Student houses, holiday lets and guest houses near the station see more bed bugs than family homes. They arrive in luggage and second-hand furniture, and they spread room to room if the first treatment is not thorough.

Businesses and farm buildings

Takeaways on Botchergate, food producers and the farms around Carlisle all need regular rodent control to stay compliant. We offer commercial pest control contracts with written reports for inspections.

The Carlisle pest year

Spring

Queen wasps and bees choose nest sites. Moles active in gardens.

Summer

Wasp nests at full size. Ants in kitchens.

Autumn

Mice and rats move in from farmland. Grey squirrels look for lofts.

Winter

Rodents settled indoors. Heavy rain pushes rats out of drains.

Questions

Pest Control in Carlisle: FAQs

Do you cover all of Carlisle and the villages around it?

Yes. We cover the whole city and the CA1 to CA6 postcodes, including Stanwix, Harraby, Botcherby, Morton, Denton Holme, Dalston, Wetheral and Longtown, plus Brampton (CA8). If you are just outside that, call us anyway and we will tell you straight away whether we can reach you.

How quickly can you get to me in Carlisle?

Same-day callouts depend on technician availability, and distances in Cumbria are longer than in a city centre, so calling early in the day gives you the best chance. We are open Monday to Thursday 7am to 8pm and Friday to Sunday 8am to 6pm.

Does the council do pest control in Carlisle?

Yes. Since 2023 Carlisle has been part of Cumberland Council, which offers pest control for homes and businesses by appointment, with charges listed on its website. We work independently, so you can also call us if you would like a local technician, proofing work to stop pests coming back, or an ongoing commercial contract.

Can you remove squirrels from my loft?

If they are grey squirrels, yes. Red squirrels are protected by law and Cumbria is one of their last strongholds, so we always confirm the species first. For greys, we remove them and then proof the entry points so others cannot move in.

I live near the river. Why do the rats keep coming back?

Homes close to the Eden, Caldew and Petteril sit next to natural rat habitat, and older or flood-damaged drains often give rats a route under the house. Treatment alone will not stop them if the route is still open, so we find the entry point, and where the drains are the cause we can carry out a drain survey.
