The town we work in

Workington at a Glance

Workington is a port town at the mouth of the River Derwent, built on steel and coal and now home to docks, warehouses and large housing estates. River, industry and family homes each bring their own pests.

25,448

People in the parish

2021 Census figure for the town and its districts. Most live in the estates spread out from the centre.

River Derwent

Meets the Solway Firth

The town grew where the Derwent reaches the sea. Riverbanks and the harbour edge are natural rat habitat.

2009

The Derwent floods

Northside Bridge collapsed and several other bridges were damaged. High water still pushes rats out of the banks and into drains.

Moss Bay

An industrial past

Home of the world's first large-scale steelworks, closed in 1982. Old works land and outbuildings give rodents cover close to homes.

Docks & depots

Industry today

The docks, warehousing, waste management and recycling all run here. Stored goods and waste are what draw rats and mice.

The estates

Homes with gardens

Seaton, Moorclose, Salterbeck and other districts grew as housing estates. Gardens, sheds and pets bring wasps, ants and fleas.

How Workington Is Affected by Pests

Workington splits into two kinds of pest problem. Near the river, the docks and the old industrial land it is rats and mice. Out on the estates it is the household pests that come with gardens, sheds and family pets.

Rats along the Derwent

Homes in Northside and along the lower Derwent are closest to the riverbank, and high water drives rats into gardens, garages and drains. Where rats have been living in an outbuilding or under a floor, droppings and urine need cleaning out properly after treatment, which our specialist cleaning team handles.

Rodents at the docks and depots

Warehouses, recycling yards and units on former works land store exactly what rats and mice want: food, packaging and quiet corners. We treat industrial and storage premises as well as homes, see the buildings we treat.

Wasps in lofts, sheds and cavities

On the estates, wasps build nests in lofts, soffits, wall cavities and garden sheds. A nest started by one queen in spring can hold thousands of wasps by late summer, and they defend it hard. Nests inside the structure are not a DIY job.

Fleas in homes and rentals

Most flea calls come from homes with cats and dogs, but plenty come from people who have just moved in. Flea pupae can lie dormant in carpets for months and hatch when someone walks over them. Landlords clearing a property between tenancies can book clearance and cleaning alongside the treatment.

Ants under patios and paths

Black garden ants nest under paving, patios and path edges, then follow trails into kitchens in warm weather. On a hot, still day in summer the winged ants all swarm at once. Finding and treating the nest stops the trail coming back.

Cockroaches in food businesses

Takeaways, cafes and shared kitchens in the town centre are where cockroaches turn up. They hide in the warm gaps behind appliances and travel in with deliveries, and one sighting usually means many more out of sight.

The Workington pest year

Spring

Wasp queens start nests in lofts and sheds. Ant trails appear in kitchens.

Summer

Wasp nests grow fast. Flying ants swarm. Fleas peak in warm homes.

Autumn

Wasps at their most aggressive. Mice move indoors on the estates.

Winter

High water on the Derwent moves rats. Cockroaches stay active in warm kitchens.

Questions

Pest Control in Workington: FAQs

Which parts of Workington do you cover?

All of CA14, including the town centre, Northside, Seaton, Harrington, Salterbeck, Moorclose, Stainburn and Great Clifton. If you are further along the coast or inland, call anyway and we will tell you straight away whether we can reach you. Same-day callouts depend on technician availability, and we are open Monday to Thursday 7am to 8pm and Friday to Sunday 8am to 6pm.

I have fleas but no pets. How is that possible?

Flea pupae can lie dormant in carpets, floorboards and soft furnishings for months after a previous occupant's cat or dog has gone, then hatch all at once when they sense movement and warmth. Wildlife in lofts or under floors can also bring them in. That is why new tenants and buyers often get bitten in the first weeks after moving in. The whole property needs treating, not just one room.

Is it safe to remove a wasp nest myself?

We would not recommend it for a nest in a loft, wall cavity, soffit or shed. Wasps defend their nest as a group, and a disturbed nest can mean multiple stings, which is dangerous for anyone with an allergy. Keep children and pets away, do not block the entrance, and call us. Nests are smallest and quickest to deal with early in the season.

Do you treat warehouses, units and premises near the docks?

Yes. We work with warehouses, industrial units, food businesses and landlords on one-off treatments and regular visits through our commercial pest control service, with written reports for audits and inspections.

Does the council do pest control in Workington?

Yes. Workington is now part of Cumberland Council, which offers pest control for homes and businesses in the former Allerdale area by appointment, with charges listed on its website. We work independently, so you can also call us for a local technician, follow-up visits or cleaning after an infestation.
